Sand filters are the most commonly used elements for the filtration of water with low or medium loads of pollutants, which require the retention of particles up to twenty microns in size. The suspended particles in the water are retained as they pass through a sand filter bed. Once the filter has been loaded with impurities, reaching a pre-set pressure drop, it can be regenerated by backwashing.

The quality of the filtration depends on several parameters, among others, the shape of the filter, the height of the filter bed, the characteristics and granulometry of the filtering mass, the filtration speed, etc.
